Forestscapes
These paintings are, in essence, a simple glorification of the trees. Hopefully, I have captured a little of what it feels like to walk amongst them.

The End of October
continuing with my exploration of the colors and textures of the fall, this is another large painting in which , I hope, it is possible to immerse oneself in the smell and sounds, as well as the visual delight of the falling leaves in the October woods.
It is a painting for the lover of this time of year. When all the lush greens have gone and a quietness descends in the forest. For me, the best time of year to get inspired and reach for the cadmium yellow. Thanks for looking.
(Due to it's size , I would need to send this rolled up , off the stretchers, and it would need taking to a proper framers to be restretched )

Arch
The arch signifies the opening of new perspectives and the ability. to see beyond the present. It is also used in some cultures as a symbol of renewal, representing a rite of passage where one leaves the old behind to embrace the new..
I borrowed heavily from the Romantic painters of the late 18th century for this one. It seemed to suit the subject matter.
Oil on canvas. 60 ×60 cms

Gold leaves, blue trees.
I was trying to capture the light through the trees...again.. this time I wanted the painting to look at it's best in the night time under artificial light so I accentuated the blue in the tree trunks and the gold in the leaves for maximum effect.

High above the stream
A fairly classical painting of the view from the top of one of the ravines that surround us. There is always a little stream at the bottom of these ravines which one can just make out.
It’s fairly large at 100 x 120 cms

Forestscape. Pink and Orange.
This painting follows a series of large works inspired by the woods here in the Balkans. Last year there was a splendid show of autumnal color and I have slightly exaggerated this for maximum impact in this large canvas..I was really pleased with the way the restricted color scheme worked out .

Straight Elms
We are surrounded here by a forest of oaks , birches and elms.. and here is the latter in all their reach for the sky beauty. I am always struck by how straight and tall they grow, hardly getting any thinner as they get taller. Perfect for firewood and a strong graphic to paint..We seem to be often blessed with this lovely bluish tinge to the background which acts as a perfect foil for the autumn leaves .

Golden Silva.
One of the first in this new series and one of my early successes . It sold very quickly.

I love the forest
This was my first proper attempt at a woodscape , as I came to call them . I was endeavoring to place a whole forest scene in front of the viewer, something to lose oneself in. After this one I was encouraged to make them larger and more imposing.

Yoshino Cherry
I usually prefer to make paintings based on my own photographs, but I came across a few photographs of this flowering cherry tree and decided I really had to try and make my own image . It doesn’t say who the photographer is, so, I can’t credit him, but it was taken in Hyogo, Japan, and the tree is a Prunus Yedoensis, also known as a Yoshino Cherry. It is certainly a stunner. I hope I have done it justice.

Forestscape. Blue and yellow.
I think this was my most successful in this series. A lovely big canvas . The colors worked well together and there is a sense of movement to the falling leaves which I feel I have managed to capture. . It now hangs in a very posh house in Kansas and looks rather splendid I must say!

Elm trees in the fall.
I decided to use a palette knife for this one in an attempt to keep it more spontaneous and a little less concerned with detail.I have always loved a nice thick splodge of oil paint ever since witnessing Van Gogh’s work in the flesh. I was very pleased with the way it turned out. It hangs on our bedroom wall.

Immerse yourself.
I painted this one as an opening image to my website. The view is of the valley where we live at the peak of it’s autumnal colours. The figure is taken from a scene in the film about Lowry, starring Timothy Small. In the film he is actually looking at the Yorkshire dales, or it might be Lancashire.. can’t remember, Hope he doesn’t mind being relocated. My good friend suggested it should say expose yourself to nature and he should be opening his raincoat… either way , if you don’t like him in there, I can paint him out!

Observatory crest.
This painting represents the view from the side of a very steep gorge not far from where we live. There is something about this particular valley that makes the colors on the other side of the hill take on all sorts of interesting hues of cool greens , blues and mauves. I have exaggerated them a little but not as much as you might think. This one now hangs in Kingston-upon-Thames, London , thanks to my dear friend Shirley.

Silver Birches
A rather impressionistic autumnal view of a meadow with some silver birches in the background. Painted using a palette knife to keep in nice and loose. Lots of texture and thick paint. A pleasure to paint. Looks lovely on our lounge wall which is painted a complimentary green.

Underwood
It has been suggested that there should be a crashed helicopter or a shopping trolley in this one somewhere. But it remains virgin temperate rain forest. I realised that there is no easy way of painting ferns. The two sides have to match up, and be the right length etc .. don't think I'm going to be painting any more. But I do love this painting. The scene is derived from various photographs taken in Victoria , Australia. Once again there is purple and green contrast which I favoured around this time. Needs a good light on it to bring out the colours and the surface texture.

Flaming Ait
An ait is a term for an island in a river.. I didn’t know that either . This scene is also taken from some photos of the valley in New Zealand featured in the copse . Once again I have simplified the forms and attempted to create an ~otherwordly feeling. It’s one of only a few of my paintings to feature a blue sky. I was pleased with the clouds. I was going to call this one islands in the stream but.. with all due respect to Dolly and Kenny...I googled to find out they are an "ait" or an "eyot". I've always liked them. The idea that one could jump from one to another and so traverse the river. This one came out looking a little like a submerged dragon, but I never mind when these animals turn up in paintings.
This was the first time in ages that I painted a blue sky and some fluffy clouds. It came out as a really happy picture. A little "Lucy in the Sky" with tangerine trees and cellophane flowers. I always like to get some ethereal quality in my work

Mossy Liquer
Another temperate rain forest painting.. Not a tropical one.. no monkeys or dangerous animals.. just lots of ferns and moss.. I had some fun introducing some patterns to the background and was very happy with the colors. It’s quite a small painting for me. The title comes from a Robyn Hitchcock song. Check him out if you like idiosyncratic singer songwriters in the tradition of Syd Barrett. Hugely inspirational to me. Must have the right kind of music whilst I paint.

Beach Path
The concept for the painting came from my childhood holidays in Cornwall. We used to have to park the car and walk to the beach, and the excitement I felt as we stood on the ridge looking down on the beach has never left me.
The landscape itself has been modified by trips to more exotic places. I had the same feeling when I first saw the amazing blues of the Mediterranean, and I hope this joy comes across to you.
I have simplified the shapes in an attempt to focus on the emotion rather than the details of the landscape.

Winterwood
This one is strongly influenced by my admiration for the landscapes of Gustave Klimt. He is more well known for his decorative figure paintings but he was a fine painter of landscapes.. always finding patterns and textures to revel in. The bark of the trees inspired me here. I like the almost silence of a woodland scene in the snow.

Rocky Path
A very decorative interpretation of the light falling on a rocky path through the mountains of Greece. I had lots of fun making interesting shapes . I$2250t’s not quite cubism but there’s more than a little of George Braque in there.

The Source
Who doesn't love a little stream winding it's way through the trees. The sound of the water trickling over the rocks . I like the patterns the moss makes as it creeps over the stone.
It's always a little tricky painting such strong greens but I hope the orange balances things out . I suppose it’s quite an English sort of scene. This green and pleasant land.
I like the idea of "The Source".. Big things starting out small.
I have shown it framed here as I think it really enhances the painting and gives you an idea of what works.

Flowering cherry
The end of the dark days of winter and the promise of the summer to come... who doesn't love a the sight of a tree in full blossom? Great to paint as well.
This was painted on a black background so the twigs and branches are left unpainted.. it's the opposite of watercolour where the paper is left untouched for the white areas.

Mama Vesey's barn. 3
Here it is again. Since painting these they have replaced the plotchi roof of the barn on the right , and it has lost all it’s period charm. In case you are interested.. the heavy stone roofs are supported by thick oak beams. When the roof starts to deteriorate there are no longer the oak beams, or the expertise , , to repair them without spending a lot of money. So they are slowly disappearing.

Tranito barn
A simple sketch of an interesting barn in the next village. It came out rather well and is a permanent feature on our kitchen wall.

Rosannas goat.
I have always like the watercolors of Andrew Wyeth, and this is very much a homage to him. The goat was a regular character in our village.. He ended up in the freezer. Country life.

As we have a lot of snow here it is necessary to acknowledge that now and again. It is enjoyable to paint in line and wash and relatively quick as lots of the white paper is left unpainted.

I had to paint this barn. It’s a real classic. The downstairs has 4 entrances to 4 rooms. One for each type of livestock. The upstairs was the living space for the owner. A watercolorists dream subject.
